California Needs Large Animal Veterinarians

DAVIS, Calif. —In California, small animals have more than 3,700 veterinarians available to care for them. But for large animals, there’s just over 800. “This trend has been ongoing for many years, and unfortunately, we’re facing an acute crisis in the years ahead,” Dr. David Wilson from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine said. It’s a scary thought in a state that’s known for ranching, and is the nation’s leader in milk production.

“Obviously, you can’t have safe food without healthy animals. And our practitioners are vital to recognize new diseases and problems in a large animal population,” state veterinarian Richard Breitmeyer, DVM, said. The veterinary school at UC Davis graduates about 130 students a year, and jobs are waiting.
